5 cheap drums for beginners

Updated: Aug 11, 2023

Buying your first drum kit can be daunting, that is why we are here to give you valuable advise on how to go about doing so. We all have the potential of making our cheap drum kits sound studio ready, by putting a good set of heads on and tuning them to a desirable pitch. So much of our tone comes from our heads, and when done right it can be challenging to notice the difference between a cheap drum kit vs an expensive one.

If you're looking for a compact kit that grooves and swings right out of the box, have a look at the Pearl Midtown. The Pearl Midtown is made from lively 6-ply poplar and sounds surprisingly big for its size: the kick is punchy and warm, toms are full, responsive, and tonal and the snare is crisp, and pops through a mix without dominating it. If you're looking for something to play jazz/R&B then this affordable kit ($420) is for you.

Ludwig actually brought in the famous Roots drummer Questlove (Drummer for the Tonight Show)to help them create a compact set of drums that travels wonderfully and that still packs more than enough punch to fill out the backbeat when you're playing tight clubs. With hardwood shells, Remo Pinstripe heads, and ingenious hardware, you'll feel right at home behind this set. Top it off with an included set of nylon bags, and you're ready to grab your Breakbeats drums and go. With the 14" snare you're sure to get a quality fat snare sound. Go give it a listen for yourself:

My personal favorite so far, the Tama Club-Jam 4-piece Shell Pack is truly an aesthetically pleasing kit. Six plies of poplar and mersawa bring a warmth and liveliness to the Club-JAM's compact shells that may shock your senses. Shells are crowned with triple-flanged hoops for a classic, fat attack and antique round badges for a hip throwback look. Whether you play swing or hip-hop, rock or funk, the Club-JAM is sure to scratch an itch you won't find in other kits. It is truly a dynamic drum kit, give it a listen here.

ELECTRIC KITS

The latest installment in Alesis's value-packed Nitro series of electronic drums, the Nitro Mesh Kit, features a full set of tunable mesh heads to deliver a custom playing experience — a rare feat for a kit at this price point. 40 ready-made drum kits and 385 customizable drum/cymbal sounds, along with 60 play-along backing tracks and an aux input for mobile devices, make the Nitro Mesh an excellent practice tool and the ultimate low-volume jamming solution. If you want to connect to your DAW or another sound module, your choice of USB or traditional MIDI I/O makes it easy to connect to your other music gear. The Alesis Nitro Mesh Kit's dual-zone 8" snare transitions naturally from standard strokes to rimshots, while its 10" crash cymbal with onboard choke adds another vital dynamic to performances.

From its immersive stereo drum samples and better-playing rubber pads to its ironclad 4-post stand. Personally I think the drum samples on this kit sound particularly realistic for this price point. Its improved free DTX402 Touch app (iOS/Android) allow you to seamlessly practice and record yourself with quality audio and video, perfect for those aspiring Youtubers.

The DTX402's 10 customizable drum kits and 415 percussion sounds offer a wealth of tones to suit your musical moods: pop, metal, EDM, and beyond. More responsive rubber pads than previous generations. Drums are fast and dynamic, and cymbals can be choked for even greater realism, and on top of that you are to add effects such as reverb to your mix or individual drum or cymbal.
